By now we hope you all know about the Beat Waste Start-up Challenge, a Plastiki-inspired and Adventure Ecology sponsored competition to surface enterprises with innovative ways to tackle waste. This challenge was hosted over on Myoo Create, the platform funded by Adventure Ecology where me + you (myoo) collaborate and compete to solve pressing environmental and social challenges… like this pesky problem of waste!

The finalists in the challenge were announced today, and with all the amazing projects, it was not easy narrowing down the 58 enterprises to 10 (so hard, in fact, that we didn’t and we’re bringing 13 enterprises through to the next round). But we hope this list of entrepreneurs represents the best of the You in Myoo, and are proud to announce the 13 projects moving through to the next round of the contest. After that, four finalists will be selected to present at a live webinar in the Fall.

We encourage you to go and explore all the entries. What was amazing about this challenge was the variety and ingenuity of the ideas brought forth to reduce and eliminate waste. It showed that the collective You is stretching to find innovative solutions to the cut the mountains of garbage we all help create everyday.

Another remarkable element was the level of cooperation. While there were similar, overlapping ideas (common themes included composting projects, websites to facilitate sharing, and plastic upcycling), the individual entries brought unique perspectives to finding needed waste solutions. However the ME never seemed to override the WE. The entrants and community contributors stepped up and truly made this a collaborative competition.
In the end, we are all working toward the same goal: envisioning and creating a clean, healthy planet free of waste.

We’re fond of saying that ‘nobody is as smart as everybody.’ We were humbled in the Beat Waste Startup Challenge to see just how true this is, and thrilled that thousands have chosen to sign up and share their ideas, feedback, support and ingenuity so that we can all design a cleaner, saner planet. Thanks to all who submitted entries and supported the enterprises in the Beat Waste Challenge. We look forward to hearing from YOU more – and if you haven’t done so already, do go and sign up on the site, follow the challenges on Twitter and Facebook.
